"Hello, my
name is Joshua Harrington! I’m 22 years old and living in a distant land…Japan,
studying abroad and learning the language for a year. Japan is quite the
country, very different than the states with cultural and religious
differences. To me, that is only one of the small things that makes this
country different. It’s peaceful here. Very peaceful. It’s something that I
could only imagine while staring at a computer late at night when I was back
home. The life or the world for that matter is entirely different from this
view. Back home, day in and day out, I would hear gunfire and police sirens
going off. There’s none of that here, save for the few police sirens here and
there.
Since I’m
here for a year, I have a lot of time to myself, something that I haven’t had
in a long time. I have been thinking or rather processing the last two years of
my life. Two years ago, I was faced with being homeless, having next to
nothing. Now, I’m here in Japan, somewhere that I have always wanted to go to.
I never believed that I was going to be here. The only thing I saw happening
was a quick end to a short life. I was proved otherwise. While I enjoy being in
Japan, there are times when I am still haunted by the circumstances that I went
through two years ago. Being homeless was just the start. Those two years of my
life are best described as hell on earth. However, GOD pulled me out of it. I
have to give credit where credit is due, even though I still find myself
wrestling with Him sometimes. If it wasn’t for God, that short life would have
become a reality. I have to remember that, I have to try and remember that with
everything that I do while I’m here. "
